South Africa’s Logistics Network is Improving but Still Inconsistent

South Africa’s logistics system continues to show signs of recovery, though reliability remains uneven. Rail volumes are climbing, and container throughput is stronger than this time last year. These are positive signals for trade and exports, but vessel delays at Durban and Cape Town still highlight the operational challenges facing our ports.

A Gradual Recovery in Movement

After several years of underperformance, the flow of goods across South Africa’s logistics corridors is stabilising. Transnet’s latest figures indicate improved rail performance, and container terminals have handled stronger volumes through the third quarter of the year. This reflects the benefits of ongoing reforms and greater collaboration between public and private operators.

However, consistent performance remains out of reach. Equipment shortages, weather-related downtime, and limited berth availability continue to affect key ports. For many exporters, especially those moving time-sensitive commodities like citrus and automotive parts, even minor disruptions have a significant impact on delivery schedules.

Global Freight Markets Tighten

On the international front, freight markets are tightening again. Carriers are managing capacity carefully, resulting in firmer rates and reduced schedule reliability. Rising fuel and insurance costs are adding further pressure, and older vessel fleets are struggling to keep up with global demand.

This is being felt across most trade lanes. Importers face longer lead times, while exporters must book earlier to secure space. Planning, flexibility, and accurate forecasting are now essential for managing cost and timing.

Private Sector Partnerships Show Promise

One of the most promising developments is the partnership between Transnet and International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Durban. After more than two years of delay, the project is now moving forward with an investment plan of roughly R12 billion. The focus will be on modernising systems, improving equipment reliability, and developing local skills.

Given that Durban handles more than 60 percent of South Africa’s containerised trade, this partnership could be a turning point. A more efficient terminal means shorter vessel turnaround times, lower congestion, and greater predictability for importers and exporters. For the wider economy, it signals a renewed commitment to restoring confidence in the country’s logistics infrastructure.

For now, logistics performance is improving, but the margin for error remains narrow. Importers and exporters need to stay proactive by confirming bookings early, maintaining visibility across the supply chain, and preparing for variability in schedules and rates.
