The Big Story: U.S. Tariffs Time to Pivot
Following on from last week, tariffs remain the hot topic. South Africa has until 7 January to negotiate a deal that could save thousands of jobs. The reality is that President Donald Trump seems set on imposing 30% tariffs on all South African goods entering the U.S.. Our previous offers were rejected, sparking debate locally about whether enough is being done.
The truth? Tariffs are likely here for the next four years. This is a serious blow to our economy and industries like automotive, agriculture, citrus, and wine. But instead of looking for someone to blame, let’s pivot and find solutions. We are South Africans, resilience is in our DNA.
What You Need to Know About the U.S. Tariffs
Tariff Rate: 30% on South African goods entering the U.S.
Who Pays: The duty is charged to U.S. importers, but it makes our products 30% more expensive, reducing competitiveness.
Key Sectors Hit: Automotive, citrus, wine, and agriculture.
Impact: Over 100,000 jobs could be at risk if U.S. buyers cancel or reduce orders.
Government Response: Urging exporters to diversify markets across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

What Is a Trade Tariff and Why Does It Matter?
A tariff is a tax on imported goods. Governments use tariffs to:
Protect local industries
Reduce imports and promote local products
Correct trade imbalances
With a 30% tariff on South African goods, our exports become more expensive in the U.S., making them less competitive and risking job losses.

SA Ports: Progress or Pain
South Africa’s ports are improving but remain under pressure, with Durban delays, Cape Town gains, and global freight rates still sliding. Importers and exporters who build buffers, renegotiate Incoterms, and lock in contracts now will be better positioned for Q4.
